Day Four of East Coast Travel Week

To celebrate our final day in New York City, students chose between three diverse NYC adventures. Many students visited the Statue of Liberty and Wall Street, others went to Central Park for last minute shopping on 5th avenue, and a small group toured The Natural History Museum and Columbia College. Students soaked up these last few moments with their SEI staff members and new friends.

Statue of Liberty & Wall Street

The most iconic statue in the Western Hemisphere – The Statue of Liberty – stands 93 meters tall and weighs a surprising 204,116 kg. The statue was given to America by the French in 1786 to commemorate 100 years of freedom. Approximately 4.5 million tourists take a ferry to the island to visit the magnificent statue every year. SEI students enjoyed taking pictures with the statue and learning about key points in American history involving the 3rd largest statue in the world. After taking a ferry back to the mainland, the group grabbed a quick lunch and then visited the famous Wall Street – home of the New York stock exchange, and historic Trinity Church (featured in the movie National Treasure).

Central Park & 5th Avenue Shopping

One of the most filmed locations in the world, Central Park, is visited by more than 40 million tourists each year. Central Park is a national U.S. landmark. In fact, just a few months ago the park became an UNESCO World Heritage site. Students and staff enjoyed strolling through the 843-acre park in the beautiful New York City summer weather. After touring the park, students were taken to 5th avenue, where they shopped at famous high-end American stores such as Apple, Niketown, and Saks 5th Avenue.

The American Museum of Natural History and Columbia College Visit

Located across the street from Central Park, the American Museum of Natural History comprises 28 interconnected buildings housing more than 45 exhibits, in addition to a planetarium and a library. The museum collections contain a variety of plants, animals, fossils, minerals, rocks, and human artifacts. SEI staff and students enjoyed visiting one of the largest museums in the world – some of the students even recognized areas of the museum that were featured in the famous movie, Night at the Museum. After spending most of the day at the museum, students enjoyed a visit to Columbia University – one of the most prestigious universities in America. Founded in 1754, Columbia University is the 9th oldest university in the United States. Famous Americans such as President Barack Obama, Businessman David Rockefeller, and the first female pilot Amelia Earhart all attended Columbia University. Similar to Harvard, the university touts a 5.8% acceptance rate and is considered one of the best universities in America. The staff at SEI believe it is important to introduce students to college campuses at a young age, as it often helps students to develop goals for their future.

Saying Goodbye

After a fantastic final day in NYC, staff and students enjoyed dinner together followed by an ice cream party at a local dessert shop. Afterwards, the group met to discuss flight plans for tomorrow, say goodbye to staff members and their friends, and reflect on their past week exploring the East Coast.

SEI Staff Highlight: RTA, Mr. Sam Wilson

Mr. Wilson hails from Wheaton, Illinois, and will be a Senior Illustration and graphic design major at Wheaton College. SEI 2017

East Coast Travel Week Day 3

After a full day yesterday, students enjoyed an early morning bus ride from Boston to New York City. Many chose to sleep most of the ride and others listened to music or read a good book. Upon arriving in “The City that Never Sleeps” (aka: New York City), the group stopped at the Westfield mall for lunch and then headed to the 9/11 memorial and the new One World Observatory. After checking into the hotel, SEI staff and students headed out for an evening dinner in the famous Times Square.

Westfield World Trade Center Mall

After arriving in NYC, students had a chance to grab lunch at one of the newest shopping centers in the area. The Westfield mall, is a new building replacing the old shopping mall inside one of the Twin Towers. The 365,000 square foot building makes this mall the largest in Manhattan. While the shopping was more upscale than in California, the students still enjoyed looking at products from famous American brands.

9/11 Memorial & One World Observatory

Nearly 16 years ago, the United States of America faced one of the most petrifying circumstances, as terrorists crashed two planes into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. On September 11, 2001 nearly 3,000 innocent people were killed on American soil. Today, SEI students spent time at the stunning 9/11 memorial, remembering the lives of these victims. The Memorial’s twin reflecting pools are each nearly an acre in size and feature the largest manmade waterfalls in North America. The pools sit within the exact footprints where the Twin Towers once stood. Many of the SEI students had never heard of this important piece of American history, others were shocked to see the exact area of which they have read much about in their history classes. After visiting the memorial, staff and students got to take a ride in one of the fastest elevators in the world, launching 102 floors in just 47 seconds. Upon arriving at the top of the One World Observatory, SEI members enjoyed a stunning 360-degree panoramic view of New York City.

Exploring Times Square

Times Square is a major commercial intersection, tourist destination, entertainment center, and neighborhood in the midtown Manhattan section of New York City. Brightly adorned with billboards and advertisements, Times Square is one of the most popular tourists destinations in the world, hosting over 300,000 tourists each day. SEI students enjoyed exploring the city and finding delicious places to eat dinner – one group even found an authentic hot pot restaurant.

SEI Staff Highlight: RTA, Lindsay Benda

Red team girls RTA – Ms. Benda – is no stranger to SEI; this is her forth year serving as an RTA. She has an older brother and an older sister and is originally from Chicago, Illinois. Currently, she is studying nursing in Michigan at Calvin college and she recently studied abroad in Ghana this past semester. Ms. Benda loves hiking, traveling, going to coffee shops and meeting new people. She has been to China once before and is planning to return in January.

Fun Fact: For the past few years, she has been studying Mandarin Chinese.

To kick off the first, and last, full day in Boston SEI staff and students started off the morning with a tour of the oldest university in America – Harvard University. After touring Harvard, the group headed to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for a campus tour and lunch. Following the university tours, the group met together to explore the Boston Commons and walk a portion of the Freedom Trail. Afterwards they visited the Faneuil Hall Marketplace for shopping and free time. The evening concluded with two different activities: The Boston Harbor Sunset Cruise and the Broadway Tour of Finding Neverland.

Harvard University

Often referred to as the higher education capital of the world, Boston is a wonderful city to learn about the history of American universities and the impact these institutions have made, and continue to make, on the world. With seven universities located in the Boston area, it’s no surprise that nearly 20% of American presidents graduated from a university in Boston.

Opened in 1636, Harvard University is the oldest university in America. It is also the most popular institution among U.S. Presidents. With a 5.4% acceptance rate, the school is known for being one of the best research schools in the world. Harvard University is a large, residential school housing approximately 6,700 undergraduate students. Additionally, more than 14,500 students attend in pursuit of a post-graduate degree. The SEI students were amazed at the beauty of the historic campus. While on the tour, every SEI student had the chance to touch the John Harvard statue (one of the most famous statues on the campus). The statue’s left foot is subjected to almost incessant rubbing by tourists who believe that the act brings good luck. While walking through campus and learning about each of the programs and buildings, many students shared their dreams and ambitions to attend a school like Harvard (or maybe even Harvard itself) someday.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

Similar to Harvard, MIT is known for producing some of the best graduates in America. Slightly different from Harvard, is the science and technology focus at MIT. With a 7.9% acceptance rate and over 19,000 applications each year, MIT is quickly becoming one of the most sought after institutions in America – especially if you are interested in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM). Known for their exceptional performance in STEM, MIT continues to produce graduates that make a difference in the world. In fact, MIT graduates and current students have won a combined total of 58 National Medals of Science and 29 National Technology and Innovation awards. SEI students enjoyed learning about this exceptional technological institution and the impact their students are having on the world.

Downtown Boston

After learning about the amazing institutions surrounding the Boston area, students and staff enjoyed visiting downtown Boston and exploring many famous and local spots around the city. In the Boston Common and the Boston Gardens, students learned about much of the American history that has taken place in Boston – stories such as the journey’s of Samuel Adams and Paul Revere. Additionally, students enjoyed the amazing Boston weather (much cooler than California), which was perfect for taking pictures in the gardens and resting at the park. After exploring the gardens, the group walked a portion of The Freedom Trail (a famous 2.5-mile trail that passes by 16 significant locations in United States history). After visiting various American landmarks, the students were given three hours of free time at Faneuil Hall Marketplace to shop, eat dinner, and enjoy street performances.

River Cruise & Broadway Show

To end a wonderful day in Boston, students were given the choice to attend Finding Neverland (a Broadway show) or to take a sunset river cruise through the Boston harbor.

Finding Neverland is a new Broadway show that mimics the academy award winning movie, starring Johnny Depp. The upbeat musical follows the story of J.M. Barrie, the author of the famous children’s book – Peter Pan. Being exposed to a theatrical performance in English is a great way for students to work on their listening skills, and to have a fun time while doing it.

The 90 minute Boston Harbor Sunset Cruise offered SEI students a chance to not only see the beautiful Boston skyline, but to also learn about the history of the city from an English speaking tour guide. Students saw Boston from a new point of view, while enjoying the spectacular evening sunset. Additionally, the students were able to watch the USS Constitution’s traditional ritual of firing a vintage cannon and lowering the American flag to signal the day’s end.

Tomorrow, SEI staff and students will arise early to head to the New York City – also known as The Big Apple.

Staff Highlight: RTA, Mr. Peterson

Green team RTA, Mr. Pederson, is returning to SEI for the fourth year. He recently graduated from Wheaton College in Chicago, has four siblings, and his favorite color is dark green. During SEI, he loves playing Uno, catching students in tag, and getting beaten in Chinese chess. When not at SEI, he enjoys traveling, mountain climbing, fitness training, and reading. In the future, he hopes to move to China in order to teach English. He also aspires to someday direct or act in Hollywood movies. SEI is Mr. Pederson’s favorite month of the year and he hopes to return again.

Fun Fact: He has studied Mandarin Chinese for three years both in China and the United States.

East Coast Travel Week Day 1

After a late night of saying goodbyes to friends and sharing memories, 37 SEI students and 13 staff members arose early in the morning to catch their 5.5-hour flight to Boston, MA for the first day of the East Coast Travel Week. While travel days can be exhausting, students enjoyed a chance to sleep on their flight before their second travel week begins (and staff didn’t mind the rest either!). Upon landing in Boston, the staff and students shared a meal together and checked into their hotel before 7:00pm. Due to the time difference on the East Coast (3 hours ahead of the West Coast) it is important that students get readjusted to a healthy sleeping schedule before the traveling continues. The SEI students will be well-rested for our big college visits to Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the morning.

The group had a busy day with a personal guided tour at Stanford University, a trip to the Golden Gate bridge, an evening at the famous Fisherman’s Wharf, and ending the night with the SEI 2017 farewell party. In addition, the weather in San Francisco was amazing – 21 degrees Celsius and sunny with a light ocean breeze.

SEI Farewell Party

Mixed emotions filled the room at the SEI farewell party as many students prepared to say goodbye to their friends. As a way to wrap-up SEI 2017 and the West Coast Travel Week, the staff hosted an SEI open-mic session to give students a chance to share about their SEI experience. Many students shared funny stories and favorite memories, others commended RTAs and staff members for their impact on their lives, and some shared how SEI has changed the direction of their life and plans for the future. This was a beautiful time for staff and students to encourage one another and truly reflect on these last few amazing weeks. 37 students and 13 staff members will leave early in the morning to embark on their East Coast Travel Week to Boston and NYC.

Headed to San Francisco

Early this morning, staff and students loaded onto four 50+ passenger charter buses and headed to the great city of San Francisco. After a long and exciting few days of travel week, it was fitting for the students to have a chance to sleep, relax, rest and enjoy the ride. The full day trek across The Golden State was beautiful, offering gorgeous views – unique to California! Because of the length of the trip, the scenery continued to change throughout the journey. Many students appreciated looking at the rolling hills, towering mountains, and stunning California saplings, while others enjoyed watching a variety of American movies to keep them entertained, while on the bus.

Getting Settled

Upon arriving in San Francisco, students checked into their hotel room after eating dinner at a local mall. After settling in, many students took a dip in the hotel pool, watched TV and spent quality time with their roommates. This quality time was very beneficial, as students will begin to part ways in just a few short days. Tomorrow, the group will tour a prestigious American university – Stanford – and visit the Golden Gate Bridge before the final “SEI 2017 Farewell Party”.

Reflections from an SEI Student

“SEI has given me more confidence to speak in English. Coming from a place where my home language is IsiXhosa, and one didn’t have to speak English all the time, SEI has made me confident in speaking it. This opportunity has made me grow in my reading and writing skills of English. Being here has made me a different person than who I was before. It has made me grow and I have personally learned a lot.”
-Zikho Gwengu

Travel Week Day One!

The first day of travel week was both informational and adventurous – setting the tone for the rest of the week. Students traveled to the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and then to the Santa Monica Beach and Pier. The SEI staff enjoyed watching the students practice their English, as they listened to their RTAs read about famous spots on the UCLA campus during their tour and made purchases while shopping at the beach.

UCLA Tour and History Lesson

Upon arriving at UCLA, the students were taken on a tour by their RTAs. UCLA is a famous campus, often featured in American movies. Additionally, the University is known for having a large international student population (12%) with over 100 countries represented at the school. UCLA is ranked #23 in the nation by the U.S. News & World Report and currently has over 43,000 students. Despite 29,500+ students that attend the university, the school has a 17% acceptance rate and is currently the most applied to university in the nation. After the tour, students ate lunch at the Student Union and shopped in the UCLA campus store.

Santa Monica Beach and Pier

The Santa Monica Beach is a beautiful, lively area with over 5.5 kilometers of stunning coastline. The pier, which extends over 300 meters into the water, is over 100 years old and is a popular landmark for both residents and visitors of the Los Angeles area. The entrance of the pier is very famous and has been featured in many American feature films. Students had plenty of time to soak up the sun at the beach, enjoy amusement park rides on the pier, shop at an assortment of stores and choose from a variety of novelty restaurants. While travel week is full of fun adventures, the students are also continuing to practice their English outside the classroom. It is enjoyable for the staff to observe students interacting with the locals and engaging in conversation with native English speakers.

With a combined seven years of experience working in student life, the Tranchells bring an adventurous and interpersonal spirit to the SEI team. Having had the privilege of being host parents to nine international students, and both having been raised abroad for much of their youth, they understand and value the benefits of cross-cultural immersion. Currently, Mr. Tranchell serves as a music professor at Crown College while Mrs. Tranchell works in the student life department at the University of Northwestern while she completes her Masters of Education in Youth Development Leadership at the University of Minnesota.

Travel Week Day Two!

SEI staff and students enjoyed a slightly overcast, 26-degree Celsius day at one of two famous American theme parks: Disneyland and Universal Studios. These parks are both conveniently located within 65 miles of California Baptist University. Tomorrow staff and students will say goodbye to the beautiful CBU campus and head south to San Diego.

Disneyland

Created in 1955, Disneyland: The Happiest Place On Earth, is the only Disney park built under the supervision of Walt Disney. Disneyland has a rich history – upon opening, the park had 18 attractions, 14 of which are still in use today. The park has the largest cumulative attendance of any theme park, welcoming over 650 million guests since its opening. As a result, the park welcomes approximately 44,000 guests each day. Additionally, last year it was the third most visited park in the world – hosting over 16 million people from all across the world. SEI students were overwhelmed by the beauty and vastness of the park! Students loved visiting many of the famous Disney attractions such as Sleeping Beauty’s Castle, the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, the amazing fireworks show and Frozen LIVE! Disneyland is truly a magical place. Today was full of many smiles and joyous laughs as students got to visit such an iconic landmark with their SEI friends.

Universal Studios

Just like Disneyland, Universal Studios is one of the most popular destinations in California, and has become increasingly more popular over the last few years. Built in 1964, the park is the official “movie lover” destination, offering more than 15 high-caliber exciting attractions. Unique to Universal Studios is the large amount of 4-D, HD, and interactive simulations. Rather than offering high-powered roller coasters, the park takes pride in the special effects, paired with their rides, that create the “ultimate interactive experience!” Many SEI students were ecstatic to visit one of the parks newest attractions: The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. This large addition to the park offers detailed replications of famous landmarks in various Harry Potter Movies, amazing shopping, and excellent Potter style food. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter opened last year and is already one of the most talked about attractions in the world. Many students purchased a variety of Potter paraphernalia to commemorate their visit to the park. These larger than life film-based exhibits resulted in smiles, laughter and an occasional scream from our SEI students! Whether SEI students visited Disneyland or Universal Studios, they all created memories that will last a lifetime at some of the happiest places on earth.

The famous San Diego Zoo houses more than 3,700 animals and is home to more than 650 different species and subspecies. The 100-acre zoo is the largest zoo in the United States and welcomes over five million guests each year. Both staff and students thoroughly enjoyed watching the animals play and visiting a variety of interactive exhibits. Students also received tickets to an optional guided bus tour around the zoo and the aerial skyline tram above the park. The zoo’s clearly marked exhibits taught SEI students about the history of each animal, shared valuable facts, and brought awareness to every endangered species. One of the most exciting aspects of the zoo is the nationally recognized panda exhibit, the only one in the United States! SEI student, Jenny Liu, commented on her experience at the zoo: “The zoo was great and amazing! There were so many kinds of cute animals. My favorite animal was the firebird with a very pink body.

Westfield Mall

Upon leaving the San Diego Zoo, the staff and students stopped at the Westfield University Town Center near the University of California San Diego for some dinner and shopping! The indoor/outdoor mall has over 150 different stores, giving students a chance to shop for both American and international brands. Many students purchased gifts for family members back home and enjoyed a nice dinner with their friends.

Student Life Directors Caroline and Alessio Tranchell are in their first year working at SEI.

Fun fact: The Tranchells celebrate their anniversary every year by backpacking through a different mountain trail in the US.
